Endoscopy & colonoscopy

Medical gastroenterology is a super-specialty. It is taken after a full training in general medicine: MBBS, then MD in General Medicine, then a further three years of DNB in gastroenterology alone.
Dr. Pahuja is an Associate Consultant at the Fortis Escorts Liver and Digestive Institute in Okhla, with nine years in practice. His work covers therapeutic endoscopy, ERCP, colonoscopy and fatty liver disease.

What we see most often
Most of this is treatable, and most of it is easier to sort out early.
Acidity and reflux that will not settle
H. pylori
Fatty liver and abnormal liver tests
Burning, a sour taste, a cough at night. If you have been buying antacids for months rather than weeks, that is worth investigating rather than repeating.
A very common stomach infection in India, and a treatable cause of long-running acidity and ulcers. It is found by testing, not by guessing.
Often picked up on a routine blood test or a scan with no symptoms at all. Early, it is largely reversible. It is worth taking seriously at that stage.
A change in bowel habit
Blood in the stool
Bloating, pain and IBS
Constipation or looseness that is new and persistent, especially after 45. Usually something ordinary. Occasionally not, which is why it gets looked at.
Common causes are piles and fissures. It still needs assessing rather than assuming, and the assessment is quick.
Long-running discomfort that has never been properly explained. A diagnosis is worth having, even when the answer is reassuring.

Consultation
Upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy are done at our clinic in Vasant Kunj, by Dr. Pahuja himself. You are not handed a slip and sent to a different building, and the person who scopes you is the person who saw you.
Larger procedures do go to hospital. ERCP and anything needing a theatre are done at the Fortis Escorts Liver and Digestive Institute in Okhla, where Dr. Pahuja operates. We will tell you which applies to you before anything is booked.
Upper GI endoscopy
Colonoscopy
Dr. Pahuja consults Monday to Saturday, 8 to 9 in the morning and 8 to 9 in the evening. Those are the only two windows — he is not at the clinic during the day.
It suits most working people better than a daytime slot: you can be seen before the office, or after it, without taking leave. Please call ahead, because both windows are an hour long and they fill.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly. Bring any previous reports, scans or endoscopy results if you have them.
What is the difference between a gastroenterologist and a general physician?
A gastroenterologist has trained for a further three years in digestive and liver disease after qualifying in general medicine, and performs endoscopy and colonoscopy. A general physician treats ordinary acidity well; a gastroenterologist is for what has not settled.
Is the endoscopy done at this clinic?
Yes. Upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy are done here in Vasant Kunj by Dr. Pahuja. ERCP and procedures needing a theatre are done at Fortis Escorts, Okhla.
Can I see him during the day?
Not at this clinic. Dr. Pahuja consults 8 to 9 in the morning and 8 to 9 in the evening, Monday to Saturday. If you need to be seen during the day, our general physicians are here from the morning and can start you off.
How long does an endoscopy take?
The procedure itself takes a few minutes. Allow a couple of hours in total for preparation, the procedure and recovery afterwards.
