Press on it, firm pressure over the cut with a clean cloth, ten minutes without lifting to look
Raise it above the heart if you can
Do not put turmeric, coffee powder, toothpaste or ash on it
Rinse with clean running water if it is dirty
Call 8800844793 and come in.
Go to a hospital emergency department instead if
The bleeding does not slow after ten minutes of pressure
You can see fat, muscle or bone
Blood is spurting rather than oozing
It is a deep wound to the face, neck, chest or abdomen
You cannot move or feel the limb beyond the cut
Something is still stuck in the wound.
Come in sooner, but come in anyway
The old teaching was that a wound must be stitched within six hours or not at all. That rule is weaker than it sounds: the research behind it is low quality.
The sooner a wound is cleaned and closed, the better it heals.
But if it happened last night, still come. You will be assessed, not turned away.
Cuts and stitches
Wound dressings
Stitch removal
Cleaned, numbed, closed and dressed.
Simple and complex, including burns and diabetic foot.
Including stitches put in somewhere else.
Ingrown toenails
Tetanus cover
Treated under local anaesthetic, not just trimmed.
Checked and given where the wound calls for it.
An ingrown toenail happens when the edge of the nail grows into the skin beside it. It often gets mildly infected, settles with antibiotics, then comes back, because the nail edge is still there.
Cutting it yourself, or having it trimmed at a salon, makes it recurrent.
Removing that edge of nail under local anaesthetic lets the groove heal. About half an hour, and you walk home.

A bite is different
If the wound is an animal bite, do not treat it as an ordinary cut.
Bites carry a far higher infection risk, many are deliberately not stitched for that reason, and the urgent question is rabies, not closure. The wound needs washing for a full fifteen minutes and the exposure needs categorising.
That is a different pathway, and we have a page for it.

Follow-up here
A doctor is here 8 am to 9 pm, Mon to Sat. A cut at 7 pm finds us open.
Stitches and toenails are done by a doctor, not a dressing attendant.
Stitches from ₹500, a toenail ₹2,000, told before, not at a billing counter after.
The same clinic takes the stitches out and changes the dressing.
